Pearl Harbor Visitor Center – Welcome to Pearl Harbor, your gateway
to American wartime history. Here you get to visit monuments and museums, see
exhibit galleries and displays, and learn from Pearl Harbor survivors. Pearl
Harbor is located in the southwestern part of Oahu, Hawaii. It is the largest
natural seaport in Hawaii. Pearl Harbor is the only US naval base named a
National Historic Landmark and the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet. The
Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II. During the war time, the
Arizona Memorial was buried underwater. In order to commemorate the painful
lessons of the year and pay tribute to the soldiers who died in battle, the US
government built the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum in 1980 on the wreckage of
the warship. On September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, on the deck of the Missouri
battleship, General MacArthur accepted Japan’s unconditional surrender and
ended World War II. In order to commemorate the historical relics of World War
II, this huge warship is permanently anchored in Pearl Harbor as a real and
vivid living museum. The exhibits cover the 50-year service history of the
three wars.
